What is the relationship between a land and the people that inhabit it? Can American individualism really be a product of its environment, which appears in these images as vast, sublime, rugged, threatening, and isolated? The landscapes in this collection were taken from travels across the country over a two-year period. They seek to place viewers inside the American terrain so that they can draw conclusions for themselves.

Born in 1980, Art Vidrine spent his childhood equally near the swamps of Louisiana and in the mountains of North Carolina. In 2002, he received a BA cum laude in Comparative Literature at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, where he wrote an honors thesis applying reader response theories to dramatic texts. After flying around the world while working for an airline, Vidrine settled in San Francisco and began focussing on his art in 2007. He has exhibited in a variety of venues such as the California Conference for the Advancement of Ceramic Art and a yearlong installation at the San Francisco zoo. He is an MFA Fine Arts Graduate at the School of Visual Arts in New York.
